Proprioceptive balance: know the importance of balance training in your exercise routine

Picking up a pencil from the floor, getting out of bed when the alarm clock goes off or climbing stairs are everyday activities where proprioceptive balance is worked. It may seem too obvious, but we need to reinforce with balance training movements the balance and proprioception of our body in order to activate certain muscles and reflexes. This also improves other aspects that facilitate your daily training and avoid injuries.

Proprioception informs the body of the position of the muscles. Through balance training we do a few exercises to activate the set of nerve receptors in our muscles, tendons, ligaments and joints. This is how we can control our balance and movement automatically. With balance and proprioception we help us to activate the whole set of muscles unconsciously, which allows us to have a quicker and more reflexive response in other physical training and in our day to day activities.

The benefits of having good proprioceptive balance are improved stability, which prevents falls and possible injuries, as well as faster recovery of our joints in the event that there is an injury. There are different types of balance training activities that allow you to work on body parts such as the back, arms, legs and buttocks. It also allows you to do it in a fun way and in different disciplines apart from functional training, such as yoga or tai-chi.

with which materials and which proprioception balance exercises can I practice?

The proprioceptive balance exercises are low impact and have various levels of intensity. Thanks to the balance training activity, you will improve your strength and endurance. The balance and proprioception exercises are quite varied and you can use some materials to do them. Here are some simple examples that you can practice at home.

Imitate a flamingo and lift one leg using a bosu. Its inflatable hemisphere will provide instability forcing your muscles and nerves to work to maintain your balance.

Sit down and stand up from a chair without using your hands, with only one foot as a fulcrum. You can add more difficulty with your foot resting on an inflatablerough ball or an instability cushion or balance pad

Gradually gain more balance as well as endurance. Raise the level of your balance and proprioception training by closing your eyes, adding movement to the poses or releasing the supports.
